Workshop on Global Research Network on Economic Crime in Africa

Date

The University of Johannesburg’s Department of Sociology and SARChI Chair in Social Change and the University of Leeds’ School of Politics and International Studies invite researchers and analysts, with an interest in economic crime, to a two-day hybrid workshop. The event will be hosted on 23 & 24 April 2025.

Researchers have analysed issues of economic crime in Africa, including fraud, trickery, organised crime and corporate irregularities. A global network of researchers on the topic that can facilitate cross-country, multidisciplinary research discussions, support and collaboration can be of significance to enhance this field of work in the future.

The University of Johannesburg’s Department of Sociology and SARChI Chair in Social Change and the University of Leeds’ School of Politics and International Studies thus invite researchers, analysts and research-oriented practitioners (who work in grassroots organisations, NGOs, and anti-fraud institutions), with an interest in economic crime, to a two-day hybrid workshop.

The event aims to discuss the possibilities and benefits related to the establishment of a global research network on economic crime in Africa. It will aim to bring together analysts to, among other things, discuss their work (past, present, and future), their take on the state of research on the matter, and their interest in future collaboration. The participation of Professors Ashwin Desai, Tina Uys, and Patrick Bond from the University of Johannesburg and Professor Ifeanyi Ezeonu from Brock University in Canada has already been secured.

If your research interests reside within the domain and you would like to express your interest in participating in the event, please email the organisers: Dr Ugljesa Radulovic (uradulovic@uj.ac.za) and Dr Jörg Wiegratz (j.wiegratz@leeds.ac.uk) by 9 April 2025.
