MS 1748 African Theatre manuscripts and papers assembled by Martin Banham, The collection contains playscripts, journals and newspaper cuttings primarily relating to Nigeria

BC MS 20c Soyinka – Wole Soyinka, literary papers, The papers include proofs and typescript copies of plays and poems.

BC MS 20c Theatre West Yorkshire Playhouse.  This collection contains archives relating to Soyinka’s play ‘The Beatification of Area Boy’,


MS 1710 Adrian Hastings correspondence and papers,  Hastings worked for the church in Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.  The papers relate to politics, the history of the African church and Hasting’s publications, lectures and examining.

MS 2069 Centre for Disability Studies – Disabled People Against Apartheid group papers, 1974-1985, The papers include material about disabled people in South Africa and sport.

Feminist Archive North

Feminist Archive North, The collection includes archives on various topics including material relating to the Change Project for the European Community which aimed to promote and protect women’s human rights worldwide including in Africa, 1979-2004.  There are also research notes and associated material for projects involving women and international development and also violence against women.


Liddle Collection (First World War),  The African and East African series contain information about the experiences of individual servicemen in Africa.

BC MS 20c Keith Douglas, The collection contains literary and other material on Douglas’ experiences as a soldier in North Africa in WW2.

University of Leeds Archive

University of Leeds Archive, The archive includes various material relating to Africa.  This includes papers generated by University departments including the African Studies Unit 1962-1997 and pressure groups.  There are also the papers and publications of University staff on African topics.

Print Collections

Bernstein Collection, A small collection of works on the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

The print collection contains over 550 books on topics such as African geography, history and education, 17th-20th century.
